Therin J. Rhaintre

pronounced  (Thair - in)  (Rain - tree)

Therin lives in the RDCK near Slocan. Born and raised in Ventura County, she became a Canadian citizen after moving here as an ecologist and environmental consultant in 2012. She pursued her legal education in Ontario and is grateful for the opportunity to be back in the mountains, living and working in the Autonomous Sinixt and Ktunaxa territory of the Kootenays.

Therin helps her clients negotiate enduring agreements that operate at the centre of every family and business venture. She is a member of the Law Societies of BC and the Yukon and is an accredited family law mediator.

Prior to life in Canada, Therin enjoyed working outdoors as a ecologist in the United States, primarily in California, Nevada, and Utah. Her respect for nature and intact ecosystems motivated her to study law to better understand how to effect meaningful change.

Therin studied Indigenous Laws, Aboriginal Law, and Environmental Law at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. She worked as a law student for the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General on placement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry contributing her research to environmental legislation and treaty negotiations.

As a practicing lawyer in Ontario, her legal experience and training included tax law, aboriginal law, environmental law, family law, civil litigation, mediation and administrative tribunals. She has had the opportunity to draft and review self-governance legislation and continues to be passionate about learning and supporting indigenous laws. She is currently practicing in BC and the Yukon.

Therin puts her breadth of skills to work for each client, negotiating and drafting agreements that make sense.

Education

Some say the best education comes from the guidance, dedication, professionalism, and wisdom of our mentors. In that respect, Therin's  education is in the tradition of the following magnanimous individuals:

Brian R. MacIvor (Professor, Lawyer, and accounting wizard)

Jocelyn P. Huculak (Cat-lady, Lawyer, and cupcake master)

Shannon M. Nelson (Angler, Lawyer, and hero mom)

Laird S. S. Scrimshaw (Fax Master, Lawyer, and dinosaur)

and Kristine Bittermann, Lawyer at MAG-MNRF

Degrees

Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, Lakehead University, 2017

Juris Doctor

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 1999

B.S. Environmental Studies and National Security Policy

Minor in Aeronautical Science

When Therin isn't researching case law or helping you negotiate a settlement, she enjoys spending time outdoors. You might find her on a trail any time of year, skiing, biking or walking with friends. In spring and fall, she's likely to be behind a pair of binoculars (birders, you know who you are). And, if it's sunny, check the lake.
